It depends entirely on how you share. Adding someone's post to your story notifies them and names you. Sending it to a friend in a direct message does not notify them at all, though it increments a share counter they can see if they have a professional account. Screenshotting notifies nobody. People ask this in two very different moods — worried about being seen, or hoping to be noticed. The mechanics are the same either way, and they are easy to hold in mind once separated.

The three behaviours

Everything follows from whether your name travels with the share:

• Post added to your story: a notification, with your handle. They can tap through to your story and see the context you gave it.
• Post sent in a DM: no notification. The recipient sees it; the author does not learn who forwarded it.

Saving a post to your collections belongs in the silent group too: no alert, though it adds to a save count the author may see in their insights.

The counters nobody talks about

Silent is not the same as invisible. Professional accounts — business and creator profiles — get insights showing how many times a post was shared, saved and reached, as aggregate numbers with no names attached.

What the author controls

Resharing to stories is not universal. It works for public accounts, and the author can switch off the ability for others to add their posts to stories, in which case the option simply is not offered to you. Private accounts are excluded by default — their posts are not resharable outward, because the audience boundary would be meaningless if they were.

Worth noticing the asymmetry: authors can prevent the attributed, notified share, and cannot prevent the silent DM forward among people who can already see the post.

What resharing exposes about you

Adding a post to your story is a publishing act, not a forward. Your followers see it, the original author is told you did it, and your commentary sits attached to someone else's work. If the account you reshared from is one you would rather not be publicly associated with, that is the moment it becomes public.

It also runs the other way when other people reshare you — which is what an author sees as attribution and reach, and part of why creators keep the setting on.

Sharing outside Instagram

Copying a post's link and sending it through another app — a message, an email, a group chat somewhere else — notifies nobody. There is no cross-app alert, and the author cannot see who passed the link around.

What they may see, on a professional account, is that traffic arrived: reach and view counts move, without names or sources attached at the level of individuals. So an external share is invisible in the way that matters to you and faintly visible in the way that matters to their analytics, which is the same split as everything else on this page.

Credit, and the part that is not technical

The notification handles attribution inside Instagram, but only while the share stays inside Instagram. Screenshotting a post and reposting it as your own content strips the link entirely, notifies nobody, and is the behaviour people actually object to. The simple rule: if you are moving someone's work in front of a new audience, use the path that carries their name, rather than the one that quietly does not.
