Only the person who posted the story. When you tap the heart, your like shows up as a small heart next to your name in their viewer list. It does not go to their DMs, other viewers never see it, and the like count stays private to the poster. A story like is never anonymous, though: only a logged-in account can send one, and that account is already on the list as a viewer.

Story likes arrived in February 2022, after years in which the only way to react to a story was to message the person. They were meant to be the lighter option, and they are. Light is not the same as invisible, and the gap between the two is what this post is about.

How does liking an Instagram story work?

While a story plays, a heart icon sits at the bottom of the screen, between the message field and the share arrow. Tap it and the heart fills in. That is the whole action: no message is sent and no thread opens. Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, said at launch that the goal was to let people show support while cleaning up DM inboxes, which until then filled up with one-tap emoji reactions.

Those quick reactions still exist, and they still behave the old way. Tapping an emoji or typing a reply sends a direct message that lands in the poster's inbox. The heart does not. If you are weighing how loud each signal is, likes, comments and story reactions are compared in who can see what you like.

Who can see that you liked their story?

Only the account that posted it. Your like appears in their viewer list, the sheet they open by swiping up on their own story, as a heart beside your username. Instagram said when the feature launched that only the poster sees the total number of likes and that it had no plans to make that count public.

Everyone else gets nothing. Other viewers see no counter on the story, no list of who liked it, and no hint that anyone did. Your own followers do not see it either: story likes are not shown in any feed, on your profile, or in anyone else's activity. The heart is a private signal between two accounts, and it lives on the same sheet as the views, explained in how the story viewer list works.

Does Instagram notify someone when you like their story?

This is the part with the least certainty, and it is worth being straight about it. The heart in the viewer list is documented and consistent. A separate alert is not: coverage at launch in 2022 disagreed on whether story likes trigger a notification, and since then people have reported different behaviour across app versions and notification settings.

The safe assumption is that they will know. The heart sits next to your name whether or not a push arrives, and anyone who checks who watched their story will see it there. Plan around the viewer list, not around the chance that a notification did not fire.

Can you unlike a story, and does it leave a trace?

Yes. Tap the heart again and it empties, and users report that the heart then drops off the poster's viewer list. What you cannot recall is anything already delivered. Mosseri has explained, about likes on feed posts, that Instagram can delete its in-app notification after an unlike but cannot pull back one already shown on a phone. Assume the same limit applies here.

Unliking also never removes the view itself. Your name stays on the list for as long as that list exists, heart or no heart. If the view was the mistake rather than the like, the options are covered in undoing a story view, and they are fewer than people hope.

Can you like a story anonymously?

No, and the reason is built into how both things work. A like has to belong to an account, because Instagram records it against that account. An anonymous viewer works the other way round: it loads public stories with no account at all. That is why it leaves no name in the viewer list, and also why it has no heart to tap.

So the choice is binary. React, and be seen reacting. Or stay out of the list and say nothing. No setting, app or trick sits in between, and anything advertised as an anonymous like is either fake or asking for your login.

Watch a public story without joining the list

The StalkView story viewer plays public stories with no account attached. No name in the viewer list, and no heart to tap by accident.

Is a like better than a reply?

For someone you know, yes. The heart is the polite minimum: it says you saw it and liked it without starting a conversation either of you has to keep up. It is also the right call for stories from people you follow loosely, where a message would feel like more than the moment deserves.

For someone you would rather not know you looked, the heart is the worst option on the screen. A view is a passive entry in a list that can run to hundreds of names. A like turns that entry into a deliberate act, marked with an icon, in the one place the poster is already reading.

Common questions

Can other viewers see that I liked a story?

No. Only the person who posted the story sees your like, as a heart next to your name in their viewer list. Other viewers see no like count and no list of who liked it.

Do Instagram story likes go to DMs?

No. Keeping likes out of the inbox was the point of the feature when it launched in February 2022. The heart appears in the viewer list instead, while emoji reactions and typed replies still arrive as messages.

If I unlike a story, will the person still know?

Possibly. Unliking removes the heart from the viewer list, but a notification already delivered to their phone stays there, and your name remains in the list as a viewer either way.

Can I like a story without the person seeing my name?

No. A like is tied to the account that sent it, and that account also appears as a viewer. The only way to stay off the list is to watch without an account and not react at all.

Can I see who liked my own Instagram story?

Yes. Open your story, swipe up to the viewer list, and look for the heart next to usernames. Only you see those hearts, and only while the viewer list for that story is available.
