Vanish mode turns one conversation into disappearing messages: they are deleted once both people have seen them and the chat is closed. Unlike almost everywhere else on Instagram, a screenshot here does notify the other person. What it does not do is stop a second phone from photographing the screen, and it does not apply to anything sent before you switched it on.

It is the one Instagram feature where the privacy promise is mostly honest, which makes the edges worth knowing precisely — people over-trust it in exactly the places it does not cover.

Turning it on, and what changes

Inside a chat, swipe up on the conversation to flip into vanish mode; the thread turns dark and says so explicitly. Both people are in it — it is a property of the conversation, not a setting on your side, and the other person is told the moment it starts.

Messages sent in this state are removed once seen and the chat is closed. Leave the thread open and the message stays; close it and it is gone for both of you, with no scrollback.

Instagram is stingy with screenshot notifications. Regular DMs, stories, posts and profiles produce nothing — as covered in does Instagram notify screenshots. Vanish mode is one of the narrow exceptions where a screenshot does raise an alert to the other person.

Treat that as a social signal rather than a technical wall. It tells you a capture happened; it does not prevent one, and it says nothing about a photo taken with another device.

Where the protection stops

Four gaps, all of them mundane and all of them the ones that matter:

• A second camera. Another phone photographing the screen triggers nothing at all.
• Earlier messages. Switching on vanish mode does not retroactively delete what came before it in the thread.
• The other person's memory and habits. Nothing stops them writing it down or repeating it.
• Anything you sent that they forwarded before it vanished. Speed is on their side, not yours.

So it protects against casual persistence — the chat log sitting there for months — and not against a person who decides to keep something.

It is a chat feature, not a story feature

Vanish mode covers one direct-message thread and nothing else. Stories already expire on their own schedule, posts do not expire at all, and neither borrows vanish mode's screenshot alert — a screenshot of your story still produces silence, which is the single most persistent misconception about Instagram privacy.

Nor does it change who sees you elsewhere. Your views still land on other people's story lists, your likes still appear on posts, and your profile is exactly as visible as before. It is a property of one conversation, not a cloak.

Who you can use it with

It is designed for conversations that already exist: people you follow each other with, or whose message request you have accepted. Availability has also varied by region and app version over time, so if the swipe does nothing, that is usually the reason rather than a mistake on your part.

When it is the right tool

Good for: a phone number or address you need to pass once, a candid opinion you do not want sitting in a searchable thread, a photo meant for a moment. Bad for: anything where you would be seriously harmed if it were kept, because the mode reduces the chance of a record without removing it.

The honest rule has not changed with any feature on any platform. If it would be a disaster for this to exist, do not send it — a mode that deletes the copy on their phone cannot delete the copy they chose to make.

Outside this mode the silence is total, including for video capture — screen-recording a story triggers nothing at all.

Does vanish mode notify screenshots?

Yes. It is one of the few places on Instagram where a screenshot alerts the other person, unlike regular DMs, stories, posts and profiles.

Does turning it on delete our earlier messages?

No. Vanish mode applies only to messages sent after it is switched on. Everything already in the thread stays exactly where it was.

When exactly do the messages disappear?

Once they have been seen and the chat is closed. Keeping the conversation open leaves them visible; leaving the thread clears them for both people.

Can I use vanish mode with anyone?
