A mention sticker is a link to your profile placed inside someone else's story, so the audience is theirs, not yours. You get a notification in your inbox, and anyone who can see that story can tap your handle and land on your profile. If their account is private and you do not follow them, the notification still arrives but the story itself stays out of reach.
Mentions feel like being tagged and behave like being quoted. The distinction matters, because it decides who is looking, who can follow the link, and what you can do about it after the fact.
What happens on your side
The mention arrives as a message in your inbox rather than a notification you can miss in a feed. From there you get exactly two useful options: open the story, or reshare it to your own story, which republishes their media to your followers with attribution.
Resharing is a decision worth slowing down for. It moves someone else's content, including whatever else is in the frame, in front of an audience that never opted into it.
Who can actually see it
The audience is defined entirely by the poster's settings, not yours:
- Public account: anyone can open the story, including people who follow neither of you.
- Private account: only their approved followers see it. Being mentioned does not grant you access.
- Close Friends: only that list, described in what Close Friends viewers see.
Your own privacy settings do not filter their audience. A private account can be mentioned in a very public story, and the mention will be tappable by strangers who then hit a follow-request wall.
The controls you do have
Mentions are governed in your privacy settings, with three levels: everyone, only people you follow, or no one. Setting it to no one means the sticker simply cannot be attached to your handle, which is blunt and effective.
Tags on posts are a separate control with its own switch, including manual approval before a tagged post appears on your profile's Tagged tab. Turning mentions off does not turn tags off, and vice versa — they are two systems that feel like one.
See the story without entering the list
When the account is public, the story viewer opens it without your name landing on their seen-by list.
What you cannot do
Be clear about the ceiling here. You cannot delete a mention from someone else's story, edit it, or force the story down. The sticker is part of their media, and the only person who can remove it is them, by deleting the story.
What you can do is stop future ones with the setting above, mute or block the account, or ask them directly, which works more often than the internet suggests. If the story crosses into harassment or exposes something it should not, report it rather than negotiating.
Mentions, tags and reshares are three different things
They get used interchangeably in conversation and behave differently in the app:
- A story mention lives for 24 hours, arrives in your inbox, and leaves no lasting record anywhere.
- A post tag is permanent, can appear on your profile's Tagged tab, and can be removed by you at any time.
- A reshare of your own post or story by someone else carries your handle onward with attribution, and you cannot revoke it.
Only the middle one leaves something you control on your own profile. The other two are events in someone else's feed that you can influence beforehand and not afterwards.
Opening it without registering
Tapping through from the notification opens the story in the normal way, which puts you on their viewer list like any other watcher. People forget this because the mention feels like it was addressed to them privately.
If you would rather look first and decide afterwards, and the account is public, a proxy viewer loads the story without your session touching it, so nothing registers. The mechanics of that list are in how the story viewer list works.
Common questions
Can I remove a mention of me from someone's story?
No. The sticker is part of their media, so only they can remove it by deleting the story. You can prevent future mentions in your privacy settings.
Who can see a story I am mentioned in?
Whoever their audience allows: everyone if the account is public, approved followers if it is private, or the Close Friends list if they posted it there.
Does being mentioned let me see a private account's story?
No. The notification arrives, but the story stays behind their follower approval. A mention is a link to you, not an invitation for you.
Does the poster know I opened their story after a mention?
Yes. Opening it from the notification registers your account on their viewer list exactly like any other view, with no separate marker for mentions.
How do I stop being mentioned entirely?
Set mentions to nobody in your privacy settings. Note that post tags are a separate control, with their own setting and an optional manual approval step.
